CleanShot X alternatives for Mac in 2026: 6 honest picks
Looking past CleanShot X? Shottr, Snagit, Xnapper, Monosnap, Zight and Znip compared on screenshots, recording, sharing and price, checked 23 October 2026.
A CleanShot X alternative is another Mac app for screenshots, screen recording or sharing captures. CleanShot X costs $35 once, plus $19 a year for more updates (CleanShot pricing). Shottr is the best low-cost pick at $12 once (Shottr). Snagit is the most complete paid suite, and Zight or Monosnap suit teams that live on share links. Znip, the app I build, covers screenshots, recording and sharing in one Mac app, but it is still in invite-only beta.
Disclosure: I am Siddharth Sharma, and Znip is my product. I have tried to treat it the same way as every other app here, including its limits. Prices and features below come from each company's own pages, checked on 23 October 2026.
Why people look for a CleanShot X alternative
CleanShot X is a very good app. Most people who look elsewhere do so for one of three reasons:
- Price model. CleanShot Basic is $35 once with one year of updates and 1 GB of cloud storage. Updates after that are an optional $19 per year, and unlimited cloud is CleanShot Pro at $10 per user per month, billed annually (CleanShot pricing).
- macOS version. CleanShot requires macOS 13 or newer.
- No free trial. CleanShot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee rather than a trial, or a 7-day trial through a Setapp subscription.

1. Shottr: best low-cost screenshot tool
Shottr is a tiny native app (a 2.3 MB download) built for speed. It does scrolling screenshots, OCR and QR reading, pixelation and object removal, pinned screenshots, a screen ruler and a colour picker (shottr.cc).
- Price: free to use, with an occasional prompt to buy. The paid licence is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and is required for commercial use. Check the current price on the Shottr purchase page.
- Good: fast, cheap, excellent for designers who measure and inspect pixels. It runs on macOS 10.15 and later, and releases 1.9.2 and 1.9.3 in September 2026 improved compatibility with macOS 27 (Shottr release notes).
- Less good: it does not record video. Share links need your own S3-compatible storage.
2. Snagit: most complete paid suite
Snagit from TechSmith handles screenshots and screen recordings and has the deepest editing tools here. New licences are now subscriptions: the Individual plan is $39 per user per year and includes hosting for up to 25 videos on Screencast (TechSmith store). TechSmith moved to subscription-only pricing in 2025 (TechSmith support).
- Good: works on Mac and Windows, strong for documentation and training material, 14-day money-back guarantee.
- Less good: an annual subscription, requires macOS 14 or newer, and heavier than the other apps here.
3. Xnapper: best for polished, shareable images
Xnapper focuses on making a screenshot look finished in seconds. It balances the image automatically, picks a background colour, redacts emails, card numbers and API keys, and offers social media sizes (xnapper.com).
- Price: Basic $29.99 for one Mac, Personal $54.99 for two, Standard $79.99 for three, each with one year of updates (Xnapper pricing).
- Good: the fastest way to a good-looking image for a tweet, slide or changelog.
- Less good: no screen recording, and cloud upload is listed as coming soon.
4. Monosnap: screenshots and recording with a free tier
Monosnap captures screenshots and video and shares them through its own storage or services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and S3. On the Mac App Store, the non-commercial plan is $4.49 a month or $44.99 a year, and the commercial plan is $14.49 a month or $85.99 a year. The App Store listing says the app needs macOS 14.6 or later (Monosnap on the App Store). Prices vary by location.
- Good: a usable free plan for personal use, plenty of storage integrations.
- Less good: commercial use needs the commercial plan, and the pricing is spread across several tiers.
5. Zight (formerly CloudApp): best for teams sharing links
Zight is built around sharing. Its free plan covers quick screenshots and short recordings, Create is $9.95 per user per month and Collaborate is $12 per user per month, both billed annually (Zight pricing).
- Good: team workspaces, video requests and branding on higher plans.
- Less good: it is a subscription service, and your captures live in Zight's cloud.
6. Znip: screenshots, recording and sharing in one Mac app
This is the app I build. Znip takes area, window and full screen screenshots, including scrolling captures, and records the screen with optional microphone, system audio and a webcam bubble. You can annotate and redact with solid blocks, use on-device text recognition, add zoom regions in the recording editor, then copy, export or share (Znip features, Znip FAQ). Optional Znip Cloud adds share links with 10 GB of storage, but new Cloud access is by invitation only. Your files stay on your Mac unless you choose to share them.
- Good: capture, recording and sharing in one native app, and no cloud account needed to copy or export.
- Less good: it is invite-only beta, so some features may still have bugs and public purchases are closed. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later, and it does not show keystroke overlays.
If you would like to try it, you can request an invite.
The built-in option: macOS Screenshot
Press Command, Shift and 5 on any recent Mac to open the Screenshot toolbar. It captures the full screen, a window or an area, records video, and lets you set a timer and save location. It costs nothing, but it has no scrolling capture or share links, and its editing is basic. For quick, occasional captures it is enough. My guides cover screenshotting part of the screen, the Mac's Snipping Tool equivalent, scrolling screenshots and screen recording with audio. For the wider field, see my comparison of the best screenshot apps for Mac.
How I compared them
This is a desk comparison. I looked at each app on the jobs most CleanShot X users rely on: area, window and scrolling screenshots, annotation and redaction, screen recording, and how you share the result. I used each company's own pricing, feature and system-requirement pages, all checked on 23 October 2026, and I link to them above. I have not run side-by-side tests of every app, so use the refund periods and free tiers to try one before you commit. Prices exclude tax and can vary by region and store.
